Fans or Family? Why Church Membership Matters. PDF Print E-mail

Facebook-Like-ButtonOur culture seems to really value "Fans".  If we can get people to "like" us in some way and at least pay some attention to whatever we are promoting it feels like we're accomplishing the mission.  Jesus and His church aren't like that.  He had lots of fans at different times during his earthly ministry.  Usually when his likes seemed to be soaring He would say something like this:

And he said to all, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.  Luke 9:23,24

The disciples were constantly scratching their heads wondering why He had to be so off putting.  He didn't do it out of meanness but out of love.  He knew that the thing that would most glorify his Father and benefit humans was an all out commitment to Jesus as King.

We seem to have a lot of "fans" at MERCYhouse.  People come in herds on Sunday morning to hear preaching and music and we have a blast.  We are incredibly encouraged to see all that God is doing among us in our services, but we know that Jesus' vision for how Christ followers interact with the church is so much more.

We'd encourage you to take up the cross of church membership.  It is challenging.  You'll be challenged to pray, build relationships, give resources, and make disciples.  Jesus didn't apologize for this AND neither do we.  We actually encourage you to embrace church membership because it can be a vehicle for you to bring more glory to God and benefit yourself and those around you.

See the LINK for more reasons to become a church member.

We hope you will join us on Saturday February 13th from 10am to 3pm in the downstairs cafe of our main building.

Burlyman Retreat - February 19-21 PDF Print E-mail

citychurch-burlyman-2016-slideHello men.  We would love for all of you to join us for this year's retreat.  The theme is "Mortify" which refers to the killing of sin in the Christian's life.  It's what the Bible is talking about when it says "put to death the misdeeds of the body" for instance in Romans 8:13.  The three sin areas that we'll be focusing on are pride, sloth (or laziness) and anger.  These issues seem to be constant companions for many of us.  Scripture teaches us not only that these things are sin, but that they can be defeated by the grace of the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit.   Here is the short version:

When:  February 19-21

Where:  Pinebrook Camp in Shutesbury, MA

How Much:  $125 (scholarships available)
