Community-Service1It's the season in our church when we go hunting for some new leadership.  In our next Church Summit (Sunday Lunch Dec. 8th) we'll be commissioning new leaders for 2014.  These include leaders for Servant Teams and the members of the Leadership Team.  MERCYhouse continues to grow and so do the challenges of managing our building and the events that we regularly host.  These positions are all fantastic ways to help our church be more fruitful in leading others to Jesus and helping them grow in their faith.

 Application

They include being a coordinator for one of the following areas:

Housekeeping - lead a volunteer team who cleans our facility weekly

Maintenance - lead a volunteer team who makes repairs on our facilities (at least monthly and as needed)

Building Projects - lead a volunteer team that tackles larger projects (at least quarterly and as needed)

Groundskeeping - lead a volunteer team that keeps up with mowing, leaf raking, and snow removal (as needed)

Set-up - lead a volunteer team that makes sure that rooms are prepared for various activities on Sundays and during the week.

Communion - lead a volunteer team to set-up and take down communion each Sunday

Greeters and Ushers - lead a volunteer team that welcomes Sunday service attendees, passes out programs, and helps people find a seat when needed

(if you have questions about any of the above or would like an application, contact Ryan at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  )

Decision :: About Hosting the Homeless PDF Print E-mail

fbookA few weeks ago we hosted some conversations after each of our Sunday services regarding a decision we needed to make about hosting a dinner for the homeless (see this link for details).   In each of the conversations, there was a consensus - MERCYhouse is not ready to host such a dinner.  Even though the food prep and staffing was being done by others, concerns were brought up about the safety of the tenants (all women) that live in our boarding house and the overlap of the dinner with other weekly church activities.  Concerns were also voiced about the overall laxness regarding the locking of our doors, etc.  Much of the feedback was given by those who consistently work at the shelter or have done significant ministry with the homeless in other contexts.  You can see the notes from this discussion here.

It's finally here.  Free Rides Weekend (Nov 1,2) is just a few days away.  We'll be offering a free ride to anyone who calls our very well-publicized number.  Every year we give rides to about 1500 people over the weekend.  It's a great way to show the grace of the gospel to our student neighbors in a very tangible way and it also speaks volumes to our community as well.

This requires a hurculean effort by as many as 200 volunteers which means we need all MHers and their friends to participate.  Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with any of your questions.

Here are some of the jobs that are available:

Van Teams (4 people) - You can sign up for one job, or better yet recruit a whole team

Dispatch - This person is at homebase (MERCYhouse)  and communicates with the van's navigator about who to pick up and where

Driver - This person drives and must be 25 and have a good driving record

Navigator - This person sits in the passenger seat and communicates with dispatch over the phone and tells the driver details about where to go and who to pick up.

Host - This person is in the back with the passengers.  They help people get in and out of the van and engage passengers in conversation.  They also are the only person to get out of the van to find riders that have called and arranged for a ride.

Shift Times:

Friday, November 1st 9:30pm to 12:30am OR 12:00am to 3:30am

Saturday, November 2nd 9:30pm to 12:30am OR 12:00am to 3:30am

Hospitality Team (12 people)

We are looking for people to bring food either on Friday or Saturday night so that Van Teams will have something to munch on when they come in from their shifts.

Sponsorship (12 people/or businesses)

Each van costs 250 dollars to rent and fuel.  We need people to financially sponsor our vans.  Businesses can have their name put on a van for advertising

Prayer (Everyone)

This event is our biggest church-wide outreach of the year.  Pray for resources, volunteers, and impact on the lives of passengers and others that will come in contact with this event.

Card Distribution

We'll be passing out 5000 cards with the free rides number on them to Umass students on October 31 and November 1.  We'll also be dropping them off at every bar and liquor store in town.  Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
